The following is an excerpt from Letter to Survivors, by Gébé (Georges Blondeaux; 1929–2004), who was editor in chief of Charlie Hebdo from 1970 to 1985. Originally published in 1981, Letter to Survivors has just been translated for the first time into English, and is out now from New York Review Books.
