Draw your way through loneliness in this workshop led by Kristen Radtke, The Believer‘s art director. You can preorder a copy of Kristen’s book Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness through our friends at Bookshop, where proceeds help benefit The Believer and independent bookstores.

To start your comic, draw three panels. As you do so, take a couple of minutes to think of your loneliest memory.

In panel 1, set the scene for your lonely memory. Can you root us in space and time? What were the circumstances? How did you feel?

For panel 2, focus on an action, or lack of. Draw yourself taking action to seek out connection. This can be imaginary, or something that you actually did. What helped?

Reach a conclusion in panel 3. This panel is for anything else you’d like to say, maybe a question you’d like ask, or a gesture outward toward the future. What do you hope for? What do you appreciate or want to express gratitude for?
